Why meal prep is not just an stupid internet trend!

a

First of all: healthy eating really isn’t difficult, it’s not an art and it doesn’t mean doing without! But of course it depends on the situation – your situation.

Furthermore: By healthy eating, we don’t mean dieting here. Rather, the focus here is on the crap we eat nowadays, because apart from weight, unhealthy food also has many other undesirable side effects. But there’s a separate blog post about that.

Back to the topic.

We know it all too well! Our everyday lives, often full, stressful days due to work or other situations. This naturally leads to us often resorting to unhealthy food or even ordering food. Completely understandable, because who wants to go shopping after a long day and spend an hour or more in the kitchen? We certainly don’t.

So let me give you a few quick tips and perhaps an argument or two as to why so-called meal preps aren’t so daft.

Most of us probably go shopping once a week. Then the fridge and freezer are well stocked and you have a week of peace and quiet. There’s often some fruit and vegetables in there too. It looks nice in the fruit bowl. So far so good, but now what? We come home in the evening, are happy to put our feet up and don’t want to spend ages cooking dinner and then chopping the fruit salad.

So what if you came home, threw on your jogging suit and just had to reach into the fridge and enjoy? Sounds good, doesn’t it?

This is exactly where meal prep comes into play. You can prepare EVERYTHING. Get yourself different sized of some  boxes (we probably all have them at home anyway) and just take 30-45 minutes once or twice a week to prepare different things.

A healthy diet fills your body with energy and nutrients. Imagine your cells smiling at you and saying: “Thank you!” (Karen Salmansohn)

Take fruit, for example: it’s just sitting there in the bowl and we don’t feel like chopping it. But if you cut and portion 5-6 portions of different types of fruit once a week, or even a mixture of fruit, then it’s easy to do in the evening instead of the extremely sugary pudding from the cup. The same works great with salad. Layer your favorite things (tomato, cucumber, iceberg or lamb’s lettuce, maybe some mozzarella or tuna) in a tuppa or jar. When you get home in the evening, all you have to do is tip it onto your plate and enjoy.

You can also make a super tasty (healthy) pasta bake (recipe follows), portion it out and put it in the fridge. In the time it takes you to throw on your tracksuit, it will be warm again in the oven. Pretty simple, isn’t it?

Common sense begins in the kitchen.

This is not to say that you should only do this now. Eating out or ordering in is of course absolutely fine. However, this can help you to eat much healthier, despite stressful and full day.

One final argument: On average, every household throws away 25% of its food because it is no longer good. Often fruit too. Not only is it a shame to throw away food, but you can also calculate how much money it costs over the years. It’s frightening.

Be frugal, waste less, still enjoy delicious food and be a little healthier. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Ps: Delicious, super simple and quick recipes will follow in the blog and on our social media pages. And of course we’ll be happy to give you tips and suggestions in the studio! 😉
